Abstract: This talk will consider dynamics on complex networks that evolves under a discrete Laplacian operator and in the presence of time delays. The spatial structure naturally invites notions from graph theory into the analysis of the dynamical behavior. We discuss the effects of structure and delays on the dynamics, for both undirected and directed networks, as well as for discrete and distributed delays. We then extend the results to networks with time-varying structure, such as those found in communication networks. Applications are indicated in the fields of the stability of traffic flow, synchronization of coupled oscillators, and consensus in distributed computing and social dynamics. Time permitting, we will also present recent work on signed graphs, where the links can have positive or negative connection weights, which is typically the case e.g. in brain networks and social interactions.

BioFatihcan Atay has a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and a M.S. degree in Systems and Control Engineering from Bogazici University, and Sc.M. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Mathematics from Brown University, USA. He has worked as professor of mathematics in academia and as project leader in industry for several years. In 2002 he joined the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig, Germany, as a Principal Investigator, where he is currently the coordinator of the research group "Dynamical Systems and Network Analysis".
