Title: Quantum Noise - 101
Date/Time: 30 April 2025, 13:40
Location: FENS G025
Abstract: As we celebrate its hundred years, there is a big noise about quantum, but what about quantum noise? In this talk, I will begin with a pedagogical overview of quantum noise: how it arises, how it is quantified, the trade-offs it imposes, and the strategies available to mitigate it. Where possible, I will draw comparisons with classical noise to highlight the unique features of the quantum world. To ground these concepts in a real-world setting, I will use optomechanical systems, predominantly LIGO (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory), a triumph of noise control at the quantum limit. Finally, time permitting, I will also discuss our recent results in a closed-loop optomechanical framework, demonstrating global phase control of quantum noise.
Bio: Ceyhun Bulutay received his Ph.D. degree in 1997 from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University. He was a post-doctoral researcher for one year at University of California, Santa Barbara and for two years at University of Essex. In 2000, he joined Bilkent University.
